Travel Tuesday - Juneau, Alaska

Sherra & I outside of the famous Red Dog Saloon, where I had the best halibut sandwich I have ever eaten.

Another photo from the cruise ship, just look at how beautiful this is

I decided to do Alaska for the next few Travel Tuesdays while it's still fresh in my mind. Our first port in Alaska was Juneau which is the capital of Alaska. Juneau is only accessible by either plane or boat, you cannot drive into Juneau. There are many things to do in the port of Juneau. We had planned on going to Mendenhall Glacier, which is 13 miles northeast of town and is one of the largest glaciers in Alaska that is accessible by road. It's over 200 feet high and nearly three miles wide and it is one of the most spectacular sights in Alaska. Unfortunately for us it was rainy and foggy so we decided to go on the Mt. Roberts Tramway and view the city. This tramway travels 2,000 feet above the city into the Alaskan rainforest. If you are at all queasy about heights, this might not be the excursion for you. But it is totally enclosed and not at all scary. We had a Native American as our guide and she was excellent, telling us historical facts and tidbits. I did get a few pictures but with the rain and fog they are not the best. But if you ever get to Juneau, take this tram to the top and look at the wonderful view from above. We did some shopping and bought cashmere scarves. I've never had cashmere before and it's so soft. I bet you can't guess what color I picked. Okay, it was pink. We also ate lunch at the famous Red Dog Saloon and I have to tell you I had the best halibut sandwich ever and the entertainment was fun. They have sawdust on the floors and the guy who entertains makes the audience part of his act. As always with Travel Tuesday, there's just not enough time to write all about this wonderful city. But believe me, I will try to go back because Alaska is a magical place and I completely fell in love with this state.

Safe Travels,

Joan

It sounds like a wonderful place for sure! I love that I can travel to all of these destinations through your blog. It may be the only chance I have to get to them.

Love,
Julie
